Tom Freston
Career
From the Sahara to the C-suite—a non-linear path.
Tom Freston’s career has never followed a straight line. From Madison Avenue dropout to clothing exporter in Kabul, from MTV co-founder to CEO of Viacom, from his abrupt firing in 2006 to his return to work in Afghanistan—what follows is the path, in order.
Born November 22
Thomas E. Freston is born in New York City and grows up in Rowayton, Connecticut.
B.A., Saint Michael’s College
Graduates from Saint Michael’s College, having spent a fair amount of his time there on the ski slopes.
MBA, NYU Stern
Earns his MBA from New York University. He later admits the degree was largely a way to escape the Vietnam War draft.
Account executive, Benton & Bowles
Lands on the Madison Avenue conveyor belt as a junior ad executive. Working accounts for Charmin and the G.I. Joe action figure, he can’t muster enthusiasm for the work and chucks it all.
Travel
Bartends his way through the United States and the Caribbean, then heads to the Sahara, picking up a working philosophy along the way: operating low to the ground in treacherous, overwhelming places.
Founder, Hindu Kush
Settles in South Asia, splitting his life between New Delhi and Kabul. Founds Hindu Kush, a textile and clothing export company designing and manufacturing contemporary clothing for the American market. The business runs for eight years and generates millions in sales—until the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and Carter-era import restrictions force him to fold it.
Joins Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment Company
Back in New York, deep in debt at 33, Freston spots an ad in Billboard and interviews with a 26-year-old Bob Pittman for a marketing job at a new music video cable channel. Pittman wonders aloud about the “Afghanistan” line on Freston’s resume, suspects he’s a hashish smuggler, and decides that makes him like Freston more.
MTV launches; head of marketing
On August 1, 1981, MTV goes on the air. As head of marketing, Freston builds the iconic “I Want My MTV” campaign, ambushing Pete Townshend on a London street and David Bowie on a Swiss ski slope to demand cable systems carry the new network. The campaign becomes a cultural phenomenon.
Viacom acquires MTV Networks
Sumner Redstone’s Viacom buys MTV Networks for $513 million.
President & CEO, MTV Networks
Freston is named President and CEO of MTV Networks. He will hold the role for 17 years. Under his leadership, MTV Networks expands to include Nickelodeon, VH1, Comedy Central, CMT, TV Land, Spike, Logo, and more. By 1994, MTV reaches 250 million homes in 58 countries.
Comedy Central
Co-brokers a merger with HBO’s Michael Fuchs to combine MTV’s HA! comedy network with HBO’s rival Comedy Channel, forming Comedy Central—a joint venture that will later launch The Daily Show, South Park, Chappelle’s Show, and The Colbert Report.
Co-President & co-COO, Viacom
Following Mel Karmazin’s departure, Freston is named co-president and co-COO of Viacom alongside Leslie Moonves, overseeing MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures, Famous Music, and Simon & Schuster.
Named to Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World.”
CEO, Viacom → fired
On December 31, 2005, Viacom splits into two companies; Freston becomes CEO of the second Viacom. On September 5, 2006, Sumner Redstone fires him in a two-minute meeting. As Freston leaves 1515 Broadway for the last time, more than a thousand employees gather spontaneously in the lobby to give him a hero’s send-off.
